FAA FUNDS SOUTH LAFOURCHE AIRPORT TAXIWAY The Greater Lafourche Port Commission has announced that the FAA has granted almost $4.3 million to fund the completion of a full parallel taxiway at the South Lafourche Leonard Miller, Jr. Airport in Galliano, LA. The parallel taxiway is currently 2500 feet and will be expanded to 6500 feet, which is the length of the full runway. INDEPENDENCE ISLAND REEF - GRAND ISLE The Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) and the LA Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) have completed construction on Independence Island Reef, believed to be the largest limestone inshore artificial reef project ever in Louisiana. “This project is the result of nearly two years of hard work and dedication by CCA volunteers, the LDWF and NOAA,” said David Cresson, CCA LA Executive Director. . . . click here for more

LEON THERIOT LOCK The Leon Theriot Lock is located at the southern end of the South Lafourche ring levee system consists of the old Leon Theriot floodgate and a new structure to the north. The two work together to “lock” Bayou Lafourche closed. After a ship passes the old Leon Theriot floodgate, the gate shuts behind it. CAMINADA BAY BRIDGE, GRAND ISLE The Caminada Bay Bridge on LA Highway 1 will be replaced by a new one 60 feet upstream, at a cost between $30-$45 million.
Keeping the old bridge open while building the new one will allow a continued free flow of traffic onto Grand Isle.
The new bridge will be two lanes, but will have two 8-foot shoulders on both sides. It will be elevated 48 feet, allowing bigger boats to pass . . . click here for more

NORTH LAFOURCHE LEVEES A central Lafourche levee project designed to bolster flood protection north of the Intracoastal Waterway and west of Bayou Lafourche is taking shape after months of bureaucratic delays. Crews have built a first mound of dirt along the Forty Arpent Canal and Bayou L’eau Bleu — near Valentine — that will become an eight-mile stretch of nine-foot tall levee in a couple of years.

NEW LAROSE LIFT BRIDGE Thanks to the federal economic-stimulus package, construction has begun on a $30.4 million new bridge in Larose to help ease 18-wheeler traffic and aid evacuations.
